United must build on historic Pearse Stadium win

It was a flat Friday in Pearse Stadium, but Galway United got the three points they needed from their new home.

For a novel occasion, with discounted tickets and quite a large logistical effort, the turnout was disappointing. Those lucky enough to be there saw Stephen Walsh further cement his legacy with a brace of goals that mattered to his team and mattered to him.

There were plenty of positives to take for United, but arguably what stood out was the under-performance of Derry City. Their lack of consistency is puzzling, as the following Monday they were good enough to get a point in Tallaght.

That same trip awaits United tomorrow night. It is not one they have historically relished, although John Caulfield’s teams have been competitive. Rovers have also been inconsistent this season. They have lost against Dundalk, Sligo and Shels in their last six so United needn’t travel with no hope.

Their side is still littered with talent even if they are missing Pico Lopes who will be otherwise engaged tomorrow night.

United travel in reasonable shape. Arthur Parker was an unused sub on Friday, he would bring a boost were he able to manage minutes. Even in his absence, the defence looked solid with Gianfranco Facchineri again impressing. Lee Devitt looks to have nailed down the spot at left-back.

Matthew Wolfe covered a lot of ground in midfield and impressed last time out. Conor McCormack turned in his best display of the season. Aaron Bolger and David Hurley were as impressive as ever this season.

The area of most interest might be in attack where Kris Twardek looks like he will be unavailable. There were a number of options on the bench, but it was Junior Thiam who got his first minutes of the season as a late sub.

Walsh though continues to shine and last week will be a game forever associated with him. Should he manage to inspire his side to end their hoodoo with Shamrock Rovers, it would be another significant achievement in a storied career.
