Era of bringing crocks onto the roads is over – judge

A judge told a young man with a series of driving convictions that the “era of bringing crocks onto the roads was gone” and he should be disqualifying him from driving for a lengthy period for his behaviour.

Before Judge James Faughnan at Loughrea District Court was Killian Farrell, Moyglass, Loughrea, charged with driving a dangerously defective vehicle on August 27 last and also with driving without insurance.

The court was told that Farrell’s 08 VW Jetta was emitting so much smoke that it drew the attention of the Gardaí. He was stopped, and the car was seized.

He had four previous convictions – one for dangerous driving, one for dangerous driving reduced to careless, and two for having defective vehicles on the road.

“I know what’s happening here, buying crocks and putting them on the road. That era has gone, and I should be putting you off the road for some serious time,” the judge told Farrell.

John Nash, solicitor (defending ), pleaded that his client was working as a landscaper in Moycullen. He was driving a company vehicle and needed his licence for his work.

“I’ll give him a chance so,” the judge said, and adjourned the case until next December, saying that if Farrell hadn’t come to Garda attention in the intervening period, he would allow him another lengthy adjournment so accumulated penalty points wouldn’t put him off the road and out of work.
