A new chapter in Portumna’s vibrant community life is set to begin this June with the launch of a monthly market at the historic Portumna Courthouse. The inaugural event will take place tomorrow Friday, June 12, from 9am to 1pm, marking the start of what organisers hope will become a much-loved fixture in the town’s cultural and commercial calendar.

Taking place in one of Portumna’s most iconic and beautifully restored buildings, the market will provide a welcoming space where local producers, artisans, crafters and food vendors can showcase their products while connecting directly with customers. Designed to celebrate local enterprise and foster community engagement, the event promises a diverse and enjoyable experience for residents and visitors alike.

From freshly harvested produce and handcrafted goods to speciality foods, unique gifts and artisan creations, shoppers can look forward to discovering a wide range of high-quality, locally made products. The market will offer an opportunity not only to support local businesses but also to experience the creativity, talent and entrepreneurial spirit that exists throughout the region.

The initiative has been developed with a vision of creating a regular gathering place that strengthens community connections while contributing to the local economy. By bringing together traders, residents and visitors in a central and historic location, organisers hope the market will become a destination event that encourages people to spend time in Portumna and explore all that the town has to offer.

Important addition

Courthouse Manager Vicki Clough expressed her excitement ahead of the launch, describing the market as an important addition to the courthouse’s growing role as a community hub.

“We’re incredibly excited to bring this market to life at such an iconic location,” she said. “Our goal is to create a space where local businesses can thrive and the community can come together to enjoy high-quality, locally made products. June 12th is just the beginning, and we’re looking forward to growing this into a must-visit monthly event.”

The initiative has also received strong support from Galway County Council. Liam Hanrahan, Director of Economic Development and Planning, highlighted the positive impact the market is expected to have on both the local economy and the wider community.

“This market is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the talent and entrepreneurship within the local community,” he said. “It will not only support local traders but also attract visitors to Portumna, benefiting the wider local economy. We’re proud to support this initiative and encourage everyone to come along and experience it.”

Unique dimension

The market’s setting within the historic courthouse adds a unique dimension to the event. The landmark building, which has been carefully restored and repurposed in recent years, provides a distinctive backdrop that blends heritage, culture and commerce. Organisers believe the venue’s character and central location will help create a memorable and enjoyable experience for all who attend.

As preparations continue for the opening event, anticipation is building among traders and community members eager to see the market come to life. With plans for the market to take place on the first Friday of every month, organisers are confident it will quickly establish itself as a regular attraction and an important platform for local businesses.

The inaugural market on June 12 represents more than just a new shopping opportunity; it is a celebration of community, creativity and local enterprise. Visitors are encouraged to come along, meet local producers, discover unique products and enjoy the welcoming atmosphere of this exciting new monthly event.
