As the River Corrib flows through Galway and into Galway Bay, it connects communities, shapes local identities and supports rich ecosystems. This month, audiences are invited to experience the river in a new and imaginative way through Rooted in the River, a unique dance theatre production that explores stories, memories and impressions inspired by one of Galway’s most treasured natural landmarks.
These preview performances are hosted by the University of Galway School of English, Media & Creative Arts and the School of Natural Sciences, bringing together artists, researchers and community voices in a creative celebration of the Corrib. Through movement, storytelling and visual art, the production reflects on the river’s cultural, environmental and social significance.
Featuring a cast of ten dancers, Rooted in the River invites audiences on a journey through the landscapes, histories and emotions connected to the waterway. The performance is co-directed by Deidre Cavazzi and Jessamyn Fairfield, with choreography by Deidre Cavazzi, Róisín Hanley and Michelle Palmer. Visual art for the project is created by Caitlyn Rooke, adding another layer to this multidisciplinary exploration of place and belonging.
Visitors are encouraged to arrive early and immerse themselves in the event experience. Lobby exhibits and a public art and storytelling installation open at 12:30pm, thirty minutes before the performance begins. Audience members are invited to contribute their own reflections, memories and connections to the river, helping to create a shared community artwork that celebrates the many ways people engage with the Corrib.
The performance begins at 1:00pm and lasts approximately 45 minutes. Through expressive choreography and collaborative storytelling, the dancers bring the spirit of the river to life, exploring themes of movement, ecology, community and change. Following the performance, attendees are invited to join a guided nature walk along the river, providing an opportunity to connect directly with the landscape that inspired the work.
The cast includes Olivia Berry, Ari Bhatti, Deidre Cavazzi, Caitlyn Coyne, Emilia Duda, Jessamyn Fairfield, Róisín Hanley, Michelle Palmer, Linda Schirmer and Stefanie Weenink.
Rooted in the River is supported through funding from Research Ireland Discover and the Department of Education. The event is free to attend, but advance booking is required.
Whether you are interested in dance, environmental storytelling, community engagement or Galway’s natural heritage, this special event offers a memorable opportunity to experience the Corrib through art, imagination and shared discovery.
