The speakers at the event will include TikTok star Shane McCarthy, Lee Anna Ward of Galway Traveller Movement and Youth Work Ireland Galway, and Martin Ward of Bru Bhride Youthspace.
The event – the first Traveller Pride event to be held in Athenry – will take place from 1pm to 2.30pm in Athenry Community Hall today (Thursday ). Booking is available via Eventbrite.
The panel discussion will focus on topics including Traveller identity, intersectionality, and culture.
Emma Ward, the host of the event, will also be presented with the Traveller Pride Award for intersectionality at the event.
Ms Ward, who is both a proud Traveller and a disabled person, is also a prominent journalist and activist, campaigning for and writing about issues which affect both of these communities.
“It’s a great honour to me, it’s a recognition from my own community,” Ms Ward said ahead of the award ceremony. “I’m a proud disabled person and a proud Traveller, so to be recognised for that is a great honour. It’s mind-boggling.”
Traveller Pride runs this year from May 18 to 29.
