Wifi and mobile phone connectivity within Portiuncula University Hospital in Ballinasloe is to be enhanced in the coming weeks, the HSE Regional Health Forum was told this week after thequality of the signal was raised by county councillor Alan Harney.

Cllr Harney told the meeting that he had been informed of the poor quality signal within the hospital campus and and urged the HSE to address the matter given how important connectivity on the site is for patients, staff and visitors.

In response, Niall Colleary, Assistant National Director of Capital and Estates for the HSE West and North West health region said the matter is being addressed and that the HSE are aiming to have a Design Team appointed in the coming weeks to progress with the works to enhance the Wifi coverage and mobile phone connectivity within the hospital.

Cllr Harney had also sought clarification on the progress of the extension to the ED at the hospital

“HSE were granted planning in January for an ED Extension at PUH. A contractor has been appointed for the enabling works and is on site.

“The detailed design for the main ED extension project is ongoing and procurement for the Main Building Contractor will follow. Enabling works for the expansion to the Emergency Department at PUH are on-going.

“The ED Extension contract will commence following completion of these Enabling Works. Project delivery is multi- phased to ensure PUH and ED service capacity is retained during the works. Access for ED patients and visitors is not affected during these enabling works and a comprehensive traffic management plan is in place,” he added.
