Four-year road ban for home carer who drove without insurance

A home-care worker who needs her licence for her job was put off the road for four years when she was convicted of driving without insurance for the second time at Galway District Court on Monday.

Anna Borges, address unknown but originally from Brazil, availed of the assistance of a Portuguese interpreter and pleaded guilty to driving without insurance at Roscam, Galway, on April 19, 2025.

Judge Fiona Lydon was told that Borges was convicted of driving without insurance last February at Galway District Court and was banned from driving for two years.

Michael Cunningham, solicitor (defending ), said his client was no longer driving. She was a home carer who needed a car for her job, but she is now making do with public transport. She had attempted the theory test in an effort to get a licence, but without success. He told the court his client had learned her lesson.

Judge Lydon imposed a fine of €1,000 on the no-insurance charge and a four-year driving disqualification. A fine of €500 was imposed for driving without a licence.
