A young man who was found by Gardaí unsteady on his feet and drinking from a bottle of whiskey at Cappagh Road, Barna, is now focusing on his health, his solicitor told Judge Fiona Lydon at Galway District Court.
Kevin McDonagh, 60 Sli Búrca, Knocknacarra was arrested for his own safety at 1.40am on September 27, 2024.
The Court heard McDonagh had 30 previous convictions, including two public drunkenness public order convictions. Last year he received a suspended ten-week prison sentence on a public order charge.
Michael Cunningham solicitor (defending ) said his client was 30 and his mother was with him in court to support him. He had health issues to deal with and had alcohol problems in the past.
However, he was now focusing on his health and this was obvious by the amount of weight he had lost, the defence pleaded, and asked for leniency as he was turning his life around.
Judge Lydon was told that the offence before her was not a triggering matter for the suspended sentence he had received last year as it occurred in 2024.
She imposed a fine of €300.
