Loughrea Lake has retained its Blue Flag for another year

Loughrea Lake has once again secured its Blue Flag status for 2026, as announced by An Taisce at a ceremony held in County Cork last week. This recognition places Long Point among the top inland bathing spots in the country, highlighting the lake’s ‘excellent water quality, safety measures, and environmental management’.

The Blue Flag is a respected international award that signifies high standards in water quality, safety, environmental education, and site management. To qualify, bathing areas must meet stringent criteria, including achieving ‘Excellent’ water quality status. Loughrea Lake’s consistent compliance with these standards highlights the dedicated efforts of Galway County Council, local community groups, and volunteers in maintaining the lake’s pristine condition.

Situated in the heart of County Galway, Loughrea Lake is a designated Natural Heritage Area, renowned for its clear waters and ecological significance, particularly as a habitat for waterfowl. The lake’s Blue Flag status not only enhances its appeal to swimmers and nature enthusiasts but also contributes positively to local tourism and the economy.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, Christopher O’Sullivan TD, said, “These awards are testament to the hard work of local authorities and local communities around the country to keep our coastal areas clean.

“The Blue Flag is one of the world’s most recognised environmental awards, and I’m proud to see so many Irish beaches and marinas receive this status today. Those who receive this award have demonstrated high standards around water quality, biodiversity protection and have shown strong collaboration with local tourism service providers to lead the way in sustainable coastal management.”

Cherished local landmark

The Long Point area of the lake offers a sandy beach, changing facilities, and is lifeguarded during the summer months, making it a popular spot for families and outdoor enthusiasts. The lake also supports activities such as fishing, kayaking, and sailing, reflecting the community’s commitment to preserving its natural beauty and promoting sustainable recreation.

Having welcomed many visitors during the recent sunny spell, Loughrea Lake’s continued Blue Flag status ensures that it will be ready to welcome those seeking a clean, safe and environmentally responsible destination this summer.

Its sustained Blue Flag status serves as a testament to the community’s dedication to preserving the natural beauty and ecological integrity of this cherished local landmark.
