€500 compo or prison for racial abuse of ethnic Englishman

A MAN who racially abused an ethnic British security manager in a Tuam store was ordered to pay his victim €500 in compensation or face three months in prison.

Charles Doherty, 8 Ballinamona Park, Tuam came before Judge James Faughnan at the local District Court on a public order charge relating to the incident which occurred at Tesco, Abbeytrinity on June 13 last at 2.50 pm.

The Court heard the injured party approached Doherty in the store and asked him to empty his pockets. Doherty told him “fuck off you English c**t”.

Eric Gleeson solr (defending ) said his client complied with the demand that he empty his pockets but nothing was found.

Doherty had 57 previous convictions, including a drugs conviction last year for which he was ordered to do 100 hours of community service, and a number of public order convictions.

Judge Faughnan ordered Doherty to pay his victim €500 in compensation. Mr Gleeson asked that his client be given three months to gather that sum and the Judge agreed, but warned if he didn’t pay up in that time, he would be getting three months in custody instead.
