Galway United came away from Shelbourne with a creditable draw that tees up Saturday’s showdown with Athlone brilliantly.
It positions both sides at the top of the table for the televised encounter. The football club has acknowledged the importance of the encounter, with tickets available for free on Saturday night. Kick-off is 7.45pm at Eamonn Deacy Park.
It will hopefully entice a big crowd up the Dyke Road. Phil Trill’s team will have had a week to dust themselves off after a bruising encounter in Drumcondra. Ceola Bergin came off with a nasty looking knock that may sideline her.
The 0-0 scoreline seemed likely in hindsight. Shels hadn’t conceded at home, and United hadn’t conceded away. United had their chances though and rattled the bar early. They were also awarded a penalty, but it was overturned for an offside. Having said that, Amanda McQuillan needed to be sharp in the second half to ensure a point for her side.
The stalemate allowed Athlone to nudge ahead of United at the top on goal difference. Dana Scheriff continued her breathtaking form with another goal to help them see off Treaty. Remarkably, Athlone remain without a permanent boss, and the rumour mill is suggesting that Irish international Lily Agg might be in line for her first managerial role after attending the game in Athlone on Saturday.
Each side has a five-point gap over Shels but Saturday’s evidence would suggest not to discount a three-way tussle.
Results between these three teams have been historically why United have fallen just short, so a scoreless draw away should not be sniffed at. Saturday’s game at home, however, offers a chance to make a statement.
United did do the double against Athlone in 2024, but the midlanders still managed to win the league the same season. More often, the decisive encounters have favoured Saturday’s visitors.
Despite it being May, this game could ultimately prove to be decisive. Either way, it promises to be an absorbing encounter that should capture the imagination of the Galway football family.
