The west of Ireland has long been celebrated for its storytelling traditions, artistic culture, and creative spirit. Today, those same strengths are helping to shape one of the country’s most exciting modern industries: video game development. At the heart of this movement is Ardán and the thriving gaming community in Galway, which continues to establish itself as a national leader in digital creativity, innovation, and cultural storytelling.

This momentum was clearly demonstrated at the 6th annual FÍS Games Summit, hosted in Galway at the Radisson RED Galway. Widely recognised as one of the most important gatherings for the Irish games industry, the summit brought together developers, creatives, educators, and international experts to discuss the future of gaming and interactive media. The event highlighted not only the growth of the sector in Ireland, but also Galway’s increasingly central role within it.

The gaming industry in the west of Ireland has evolved into far more than entertainment. It has become a driver of employment, innovation, education, and cultural expression. Companies and independent studios across Galway are creating games that resonate internationally while remaining deeply connected to Irish identity and heritage. This blend of global ambition and local authenticity is helping the region stand out in a highly competitive international market.

One of the clearest examples of this success is Galway-based studio Spooky Doorway, whose acclaimed title The Séance of Blake Manor won Game of the Year at the IMIRT Awards during the summit. Set in 19th-century Ireland, the gothic mystery game has earned critical acclaim for its storytelling, atmosphere, and originality. More importantly, it demonstrates how Irish stories and perspectives can thrive within the global games market.

Speaking at the summit, Spooky Doorway CEO Paul Conway emphasised the importance of creating games rooted in Irish culture. He explained that Irish developers are uniquely positioned to bring fresh stories and perspectives to audiences around the world. Themes drawn from Irish mythology, folklore, colonial history, and generational memory provide rich creative material that distinguishes Irish-made games from international competitors.

This cultural authenticity is one of Galway’s greatest strengths. The west of Ireland has always been a region defined by imagination, language, and heritage. Game developers are now transforming those traditions into immersive digital experiences that appeal to modern audiences while preserving uniquely Irish voices. In doing so, the industry is helping Ireland project its culture internationally in innovative new ways.

Equally significant is the sector’s commitment to representation and inclusion. In The Séance of Blake Manor, Spooky Doorway introduced what is believed to be the first Irish Traveller character in a video game voiced by an Irish Traveller actor. The studio also worked with cultural consultants to ensure respectful and accurate portrayals of diverse backgrounds and religions. This approach reflects a wider commitment within the Galway gaming community to diversity, authenticity, and meaningful storytelling.

The success of Galway developers at the IMIRT Awards further underlined the city’s importance within the national industry. Alanna Kelly, founder of the Galway Game Jam, received the Community Hero Award for her contribution to nurturing local talent and building a supportive creative network. Her work has helped aspiring developers, artists, programmers, and storytellers connect and collaborate, strengthening Galway’s reputation as a hub for creative innovation.

Other Galway-based creators were also recognised for excellence. Psychic Software won awards for Best Storytelling and Best Technical Achievement for The Necromancer’s Tale, while Enigma Studios earned recognition for its upcoming game TÖLT. These achievements highlight the breadth of talent emerging from the west of Ireland and demonstrate that Galway is producing world-class work across multiple genres and disciplines.

Beyond awards and recognition, the gaming sector is delivering wider economic and educational benefits to the region. Events such as the FÍS Games Summit attract international speakers, industry professionals, and investment to Galway, helping position the city as a centre for digital media and technology. Partnerships involving University of Galway, Atlantic Technological University Galway, and organisations such as IMIRT are helping to develop pathways for young people interested in careers in game design, animation, programming, and interactive storytelling.

Importantly, the industry also encourages collaboration across creative sectors. Gaming increasingly overlaps with film, television, music, design, and education, creating opportunities for artists and technicians throughout the west of Ireland. Through initiatives led by Ardán, emerging talent can access funding, mentorship, training, and networking opportunities that help sustain long-term creative careers in the region.

The calibre of international speakers attending the FÍS Games Summit reflects the growing respect the Galway games sector commands globally. Industry figures such as Nic Tringali, Anna Brandberg, Gareth Damian Martin, and Sybil Collas contributed to discussions around creativity, design, equality, and the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence. Their participation demonstrated that Galway is increasingly connected to wider international conversations shaping the future of gaming.

As the industry continues to grow, Galway is proving that regional creativity can compete on a global stage. The west of Ireland is no longer simply participating in the gaming industry — it is helping define its future. Through cultural storytelling, innovation, collaboration, and community support, Galway has become a vibrant centre for game development and digital creativity.

The success celebrated at the FÍS Games Summit is not just a milestone for the gaming sector. It is a reflection of the wider creative confidence emerging across the west of Ireland — a region where tradition and technology are combining to create exciting new opportunities for artists, developers, businesses, and audiences alike.
