Opel and Leapmotor have joined forces to produce a new mid-sized electric SUV.
The vehicle would sit on Leapmotor's electric architecture and battery technology. Opel would be in charge of design, chassis engineering, on-board experience and lighting and seating technology.
The new C-segment SUV is set to be built alongside the Opel Corsa at Stellantis’ Zaragoza plant in Spain. Sales could commence as early as 2028. Opel said the production of the new model remains conditional on a broader Stellantis-Leapmotor expansion. Feasibility studies and pre-development are under existing arrangements, with definitive agreements still required.
Stellantis is expected to provide further details at its 2026 Investor Day later in May.
"The SUV would be designed and created by us at Opel in Rüsselsheim and developed by international teams located in Germany and China," said Opel CEO, Florian Huettl.
"The partnership with Leapmotor should enable a development time of less than two years. With this, Opel is planning a further important step in the development of state-of-the-art and accessible electric vehicles for our customers," he added.
If production proceeds, the new SUV would sit alongside the Grandland, Frontera and Mokka in Opel’s line-up.
