Corlann, the new name for Brothers of Charity Services, provides supports each year to more than 6,000 people with intellectual disabilities, including autism. Services are delivered by dedicated teams from a wide range of educational and professional backgrounds.
Nicola Beattie, a Social Care Worker in Corlann’s West region began volunteering with Corlann in 2008.
“I wanted to see if this work was for me before joining as a locum care assistant. My background was in administration and colleagues encouraged me to return to college as a mature student. In 2017, I graduated with a BA (Hons ) in Applied Social Studies in Social Care and secured a Social Care Worker role, stepping into a Team Leader position while covering maternity leave.
“The role of a Social Care Worker in residential services is broad and varied. I currently support 3 men who receive day services tailored to their individual needs. My primary focus is supporting them with their daily needs, including personal care, meal planning, promoting independence, and helping them achieve their personal goals.
“I work closely with families, multidisciplinary teams, and external agencies to ensure the best possible care. The role also involves completing administrative tasks, attending meetings, and ensuring compliance with HIQA, CQL, and organisational policies. Teamwork and flexibility are key,” she said.
“Corlann’s Ethos is based on inclusion, empowerment, and dignity. I strive every day to uphold these values and advocate when needed. A career highlight has been supporting someone to move into full-time residential care and later seeing them living their “best life” semi?independently in their own apartment,” said Ms Beattie.
