Galway United recorded their most significant win so far this season with a 2-0 win away against Treaty United last Saturday. It sets them up beautifully for a trip to Turner’s Cross where they take on a struggling Cork City side on Saturday.

It is now five goals from five games for Ceola Bergin who struck in the first half to set her side on a path to victory in front of the TV cameras. When Emma Doherty doubled the lead before the hour mark, after being set up by Bergin, it always looked like it would be enough.

United have struggled in the past against Treaty, failing to win in their last three encounters, but they gave another reminder of their improvements last Saturday.

Phill Trill was pleased with his team’s performance. “It was another good performance against Treaty,” he said.

“It’s not an easy place to go. It’s enjoyable to watch at times. There is great interplay between the front players. It is yielding results.

“I thought we deserved our win. Amanda [McQuillan] made a great save towards the end to preserve our clean sheet. To be fair to Treaty, they made it difficult. They have improved.

“We need to make sure we stay constant. We’ve been in this situation before. We need that consistency of performance over the next period. We feel we have started the season quite well but are nowhere near our peak.”

It has been another tough start for Cork, who scored their first goal of the campaign away to Wexford but went on to lose 4-1.

The league is already starting to take some shape, with United fending off Shels and Athlone at the top for now. A win in Cork is paramount for a Galway side who have found it tricky there before.

If they win it, Terryland should be rocking for the visit of Peamount on the May bank holiday weekend.
