Athletics roundup: Doggett earns International selection

Athenry AC's Sean Doggett has been selected to represent Ireland at the World Relays in Botswana next month.

Doggett is going from strength to strength and has enjoyed a great season to date. This international call-up follows his 400m national indoor gold medal from last month.

Doggett will compete in the Mixed Relay alongside the likes of Sharlene Mawdsley and Jack Raftery. The 2026 World Athletics Relays take place in Gaborone, Botswana on Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3.

Local success at Juvenile Indoor Track and Field Championships

The third and final day of this year’s 123.ie National Juvenile Indoor Championships took place in the TUS International Arena in Athlone on Saturday, April 11. Across all age groups, the event showcased a host of championship records, outstanding individual displays, and highly competitive races.

Galway's athletes enjoyed a strong showing, with clubs from across the county returning home with a number of national relay and individual medals.

The standout performance of the weekend came from Galway City Harriers AC, whose U13 girls 4x200m relay team powered to national gold, recording the fastest overall time of 1:52.49 across all heats. The quartet’s victory capped an excellent weekend for the city club and underlined its strength in sprint relays at underage level. The winning team members were Maneli Fazaeli, Thea Lynch, Elliana Magnetti, Katie Mc?Glynn, Matilda Mc?Glynn and Ribeacá Gibbons.

There was further relay success for Galway clubs, with Athenry AC claiming bronze in the U12 girls 4x200m relay, as the squad of Emma O’Malley, Beth O’Kane, Darcy Kearney, Georgia Joyce, and Maisie Ryan finished third overall with a time of 2:03.68 in a tightly contested event.

Craughwell AC also made the national podium courtesy of a strong team effort in the U16 girls 4x200m relay, where their squad earned a bronze medal with a time of 1:49.67, via the team of Adele Casserly, Ruby Maher, Faye Whelan and Grace Drysdale.

At U18 level, Galway City Harriers returned to the podium with bronze in the U18 boys 4x200m relay, clocking 1:35.90 to finish behind Ratoath AC and Kilkenny City Harriers in a high-quality race. The team was Charlie O'Malley, Mahmoud Diarrasouba, Majus Oguleviciius, Luke Spence & Kevin Sangodele.

Individually, South Galway's Luke Walsh claimed a bronze medal in the U18 Boys 1,500m clocking 4.09.

Galway City Harriers’ medal haul was completed by an impressive performance from Kevin Sangodele, who captured bronze in the U17 boys triple jump. Sangodele’s leap of 11.91 metres secured third place in a competitive national field.

Harriers claim national 10km title

Galway City Harriers Men’s team made history by winning the National title on the road at the National 10km Championships as part of the Great Ireland Run in Phoenix Park last Sunday, April 12.

Jamie Walsh was hugely impressive for GCH, winning silver behind winner Ian Guiden in a time of 30.18. Next home was Feidhlim McGowan in 12th with 32.16, with Ronan Staab clocking 32.35 in 18th and Cian O'Reilly in 25th completing the scoring quartet with 33.24.

GCH Ladies also impressed, winning National team bronze medals, with the squad of Phoebe Whiteside, Elizabeth Maher, Michelle Maher, and Aine O'Farrell combining superbly to medal.

Tuam AC won Masters Team Silver via Shane Keville, Ger Harnett and Sean Burke in the V35 Category.

Newell represents in Brazil

Matthew Newell of Castlegar AC represented Ireland in the Men's U20 10km race at the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships in Brasília, Brazil last Sunday.

The Irish team consisting of Newell, Séamus Clarke and John Glennon delivered a strong performance, finishing an impressive eighth place in the world.

Newell produced the top Irish performance, as he finished in 21st with a new personal best of 44:08. Clarke placed 24th in 44:54, followed closely by John Glennon in 25th with a time of 45:09.
