Woman told she is ‘moving into a different league’ of crime

A young mother of two was “moving into a different league” of crime, a judge warned, when she came before her at Galway District Court on a theft charge.

Showna Leonard, 11 Cuan Glas, Bishop O’Donnell Road, Galway pleaded guilty to stealing alcohol to the value of €30.40. This was her first theft charge but she had previous convictions for public order and road traffic offences.

Jack Donoghue solicitor (defending ) said his client had €31 with her in court to hand over to compensate for the loss involved.

He said his client was 28, had two children but she was no longer under the influence of another party, which was the case when she stole the alcohol.

Judge Brennan said it appeared there was an alcohol theme running through her convictions and she wondered if the Probation service could assist.

She added that this theft was a different type of crime which “moved her into a different league.”

She felt that more interaction was needed and remanded the defendant for the preparation of a Probation report.
