Student in phishing scam gets time to raise payment

A student who engaged in a phishing scam has been given until September to come up with €1,400 compensation for his victim.

The victim of the scam had four unauthorised transactions from her account and when she noticed, she contacted Gardaí.

The student transferred the money into his own account, then converted it into cryptocurrency and transferred this into the Revolut account of another male. Investigating Gardaí could trace the transactions, Judge Fiona Brennan was told at Galway District Court.

The judge accepted jurisdiction and noted the defendant’s guilty plea and adjourned the case until September at the request of the defence solicitor who said that, realistically, it would take that long for a student to get €1,400 together.
