Welby calls for extension to Barna bus services

Cllr Thomas Welby, Independent candidate for the Galway West by-election, is currently being contacted by people in the Barna area regarding the public transport service where buses regularly arrive late and full.

Cllr Welby has contacted the NTA, to see if it's possible to extend the current city service from the Cappagh Road/Western Distributor Road to service Barna. “The extension of the city service to take in Barna should be considered, even on a trial basis, as the distance is so short, only approximately 3km, and it would reduce the pressure on users to have to use the existing 424 service which has serious problems with capacity and reliability,” he said.

Cllr Welby contends that the Barna area has a large population, they deserve a reliable service, and if it is successful an extension to Furbo and Spiddal could be considered.

“Bus services should not reflect city and county boundaries as we are all Galwegians and I think this short extension would be a success, particularly when we could be approaching a period of fuel restrictions,” he added.
