A man who had benefited from COPE services in the past is to be allowed make a donation to the charity in lieu of a conviction.
Judge John King was told that Gardaí found the defendant in a highly intoxicated condition. He became aggressive when searched and on arrest physically aggressive towards them. A quantity of MDMA was found on him.
Gary McDonald BL said he client was homeless at the time but now had accommodation in Renmore. He was embarrassed by his behaviour and not an aggressive man by nature. The man, a native of the Czech Republic, had been in this country since 2018 and had never come to the attention of the Gardaí before this. He simply drank too much but didn’t have addiction issues.
Judge King said he would give the defendant the option of making a €400 donation to the Court poor box in lieu of a conviction.
It was agreed with the defence that the donation would go to COPE service in Galway as the defendant had been accommodated by COPE in the past.
