“If drink doesn’t suit you, then you shouldn’t take it,” a judge told a Lettermullen man before him who had abused Gardaí and caused a disturbance in a city restaurant.
Judge John King heard at Galway District Court that Tommy Mullen (30 ) from Lettermullen caused a disturbance in Supermacs, Eyre Square on January 17. He refused to leave and told attending Gardaí to “f*** off” and called them abusive names. He was arrested under the Public Order Act.
Mullen had three previous convictions, including being put off the road for drunk driving.
Michael Cunningham solicitor (defending ) pleaded that his client had no previous conviction for a public order offence and he wanted to apologise to the Garda and the public at large for his behaviour.
He struggled with alcohol at times but was a hard worker who cared for his father who had a stroke. He worked full-time in construction. He came into Galway to do some shopping, went for a drink and things got out of hand. He had no recollection of the events and had no issue with the Gardaí and accepted the Gardaí came to his assistance previously.
Judge King said the defendant had already “received a shot across the bow” with his drink driving conviction, adding “if drink doesn’t suit you, then you shouldn’t take it,” and imposed a fine of €300.
