The Potel Scholarship, named after the founder of the Bon Secours sisters, Josephine Potel, is a €5,000 per year bursary for Galwegian secondary school pupils looking to attend third level, with a maximum four-year duration.

The scholarship aims to ease the financial barriers that may prevent talented students from Galway pursuing university, and may also include summer employment in the Renmore hospital, subject to availability and skills alignment.

The successful candidate will receive €5,000 per year, paid as €2,500 at the start of each semester, for the full duration of their undergraduate degree programme, up to a maximum of four years.

To be eligible, students must achieve a minimum of 450 points in their Leaving Certificate, and pursue a full-time, Level 8 undergraduate programme at a publicly funded university, or other third level institution, on the island of Ireland. Applicants must also submit a 500 word personal statement outlining their career goals, indicating how the Potel Scholarship might help them achieve these aspirations. Two letters of reference are also required, one of which must be from their school principal.

Henry Burrows, Chief Executive Officer of Bon Secours Hospital Galway, encouraged schools across the county to spread the word.

“I encourage all secondary schools across Galway to bring this opportunity to the attention of eligible students, and to support them in applying. There is exceptional talent in our schools and this programme is about ensuring that talent has every chance to thrive.”

Deadline for applications and supporting documents is Friday, April 17.
