As we approach International Women’s Day on Saturday, March 8, it’s the perfect time to celebrate the women who make Galway great.

In this Women in Business feature, we are highlighting inspiring women helping to shape Galway’s industries and communities. Through leadership, resilience and innovation, they continue to break barriers and redefine success across their fields.

Ireland ranks second in Europe for per-capita investment deals in women-led start-ups, with venture capital funding topping €200 million in 2024, up 39 per cent on the previous year. Around half of the funded companies were in the health sector, including biotech and medtech.

Enterprise Ireland supported 29 per cent of start-ups with a woman on the founding team, while Galway led regional funding with 11 companies raising €54 million in 2024.

International Women’s Day offers a moment to reflect on the progress of women in business. From the pioneers who paved the way to the leaders of today and the young girls who will shape the future. It is a continuing story of determination and opportunity, driving a more inclusive path to leadership.

Ger Lyons

The Galleon Restaurant, Salthill

Situated in the heart of Salthill, The Galleon Restaurant has been a beloved institution since 1965. Now celebrating over 60 years of exceptional food and warm hospitality, it continues to stand proudly as one of Galway’s most cherished family dining destinations.

At the helm is Ger Lyons, a passionate and dedicated restaurateur whose leadership has shaped The Galleon into a true cornerstone of the community. Ger’s journey began 30 years ago when she first fell in love with the vibrant, fast-paced world of The Galleon.

“It’s such a gorgeous feeling when you’re here, hearing the laughter and chat and knowing your guests are enjoying their experience," says Ger.

For three decades, Ger has remained committed to preserving the restaurant’s traditions: friendly staff, homemade food, and outstanding customer service. The Galleon’s charm lies in its ability to create lasting memories. Families who first visited in the 1960s now return with their grandchildren, a testament to the sense of continuity and belonging that defines the restaurant.

Community and tradition are at the heart of everything Ger does. Under her leadership, The Galleon has earned numerous accolades, including a recent shortlisting for Family Restaurant of the Year 2026. The menu, crafted by experienced chefs, features award-winning roast dinners, fresh seafood, and traditional Irish dishes loved by locals and visitors alike.

Ger credits her work ethic and resilience to her mother, Pauline, whose strength and determination inspired her to pursue success as a businesswoman. She hopes her daughters, Jess and Ellie, will one day find careers they love just as much as she loves The Galleon.

Excitingly, Ger is preparing to expand her hospitality footprint with the opening of a second business in Mountbellew in the coming weeks, another chapter in her commitment to community-focused dining.

For Ger, The Galleon is more than just a restaurant. It is a testament to family, tradition, and the enduring power of community. As she reflects on its remarkable legacy, she remains deeply grateful to the loyal customers, dedicated team, and wider community who have made it the cherished Galway institution it is today.

Claire Ruane

Juice Genie

When Claire founded Juice Genie in 2019, she stepped into the world of entrepreneurship for the first time. What began as a passion for health, nutrition and fresh food has grown into a colourful Galway business known for its vibrant juices and commitment to wellbeing.

Since launching, Claire has discovered that building and sustaining a business is a constant learning process.

“The longer you stay in business, the more challenges and opportunities you meet. You learn so much about the cost of running a business, the systems and structures that need to be created within your business from start-up and beyond. It's always changing, which can be challenging, but when working on projects that you are passionate about, that makes all the difference.”

Claire’s passion goes beyond business itself. What truly drives her is learning about how the body works and how nutrition can influence both physical and mental well-being. Her curiosity about food, health and the environment continues to shape the direction of Juice Genie and the products it creates.

“You are what you eat and you are what you think about, psychology and nutrition influences how we feel and how we see the world. It feels good to feel good, when we eat good food and make sure not to consume too much negativity from our minds and the world around us, we can make our own world a better place to be.”

This belief in the power of fresh food is reflected in everything the Juice Genie team produces. Claire believes fresh, nutritious ingredients hold huge potential to help people feel energised and balanced in their daily lives.

Claire thinks fresh, nutritious food holds huge power, which is why the team at Juice Genie loves making fresh, vibrant juices. They serve at markets in Galway city, at events, at work wellness days, in independent shops, and directly to your door.

The business has built a loyal following through its juice plans and cleanses, with many customers reporting noticeable benefits from incorporating the drinks into their routines.

“The feedback we are getting about our juice plans and cleanses shows that people are really appreciating and feeling the benefits of our colourful, nutritious drinks.”

Claire is delighted to be working in the industry and pledges to perfect the art of living up to their magical name, Juice Genie.

Sinéad Keaveney

OxyGeneration

OxyGeneration is a clinic based in Galway that offers Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT ). HBOT is a therapy that encourages the body’s natural processes to support healing and wound closure.

During HBOT, clients breathe high-concentration oxygen while sitting in a pressurised chamber. This increases the amount of dissolved oxygen in the blood, helping it reach areas with poor circulation, including wounds that are slow to heal or areas of infection.

This can help speed up the healing of diabetic foot ulcers, non-healing wounds, radiation injury, pre- and post-surgery, sports injury and thermal burns. Emerging evidence supports the use of HBOT for Long Covid. OxyGeneration works alongside existing care to help speed up recovery.

Sinéad Keaveney has been a key member of the OxyGeneration team since 2018. She transitioned from the beauty industry to healthcare and trained as a chamber operator.

Sinéad helps onboard new clients, provides guidance and ensures that clients are comfortable and feel supported throughout their sessions. Sinéad has seen clients, young and old, come into the clinic over the past eight years and enjoys working with such a wide range of clients.

She finds it particularly rewarding to witness first-hand the improvements in clients’ health, particularly those suffering from chronic conditions like diabetic foot ulcers, non-healing wounds, radiation injury and more recently Long Covid.

Irish Life Health covers sessions at OxyGeneration for certain medical criteria.

For more information, email [email protected] or call 091 394 444 to speak to Sinéad or one of the OxyGeneration team.

Amanda Miranda

Amanda Miranda Aesthetics

Originally from Brazil, aesthetic specialist Amanda Miranda arrived in Galway four years ago with a clear goal: to learn English and embrace new opportunities in a new country. What began as a personal journey of growth soon evolved into the continuation of a career she has passionately built for over 13 years in the beauty and aesthetics industry.

Holding a degree in Aesthetics, Amanda has dedicated her professional life to helping women feel confident and empowered in their own skin.

Amanda has dedicated her professional life to helping women feel confident and comfortable in their own skin. When she first settled in Galway, her business began from the ground up. She welcomed clients into her home, gradually building a base clientele through dedication, trust and word of mouth. This humble beginning has allowed Amanda to connect personally with each client and understand their individual needs.

Treatments

Today, Amanda's work is focused on lymphatic drainage and laser treatments. Amanda also offers advanced skin treatments, tailoring each one to the client's goals.

The clinic also provides a variety of advanced skin and body treatments designed to support both beauty and wellbeing. These include relaxing massage, body detox treatments, lymphatic drainage and pressotherapy. Pressotherapy is a non-invasive, mechanised lymphatic drainage technique that uses inflatable garments such as boots or sleeves to apply gentle, rhythmic air pressure to the body, helping stimulate circulation and reduce fluid retention.

Facial treatments are another important part of the clinic’s services, including Vitamin C Peel, Perfect Power Peel, and professional deep-cleansing.

Not just a clinic

Behind the clinic is a shared vision. Amanda and her partner have built the business not only as an aesthetic clinic but as a life project. They hope to provide a welcoming space where clients feel valued, cared and confident in their own beauty.

"As a woman in business, I am proud to represent resilience and determination. My mission is simple: to help every woman who walks through my door feel confident, radiant, and empowered," Amanda explained.

More than just aesthetics, they deliver dedication, commitment, and authenticity in every detail. Each achievement of their clinic is the result of hard work, love, and faith in this dream that they are realising side by side

Mary Nash

Galway Hospice

Since joining Galway Hospice in 2014, Mary Nash has led the organisation through a decade of growth, challenge and transformation.

Her journey into palliative care was deeply personal. Following her father’s experience in Milford Hospice, Mary saw firsthand the difference specialist care can make at one of the most difficult times in a family’s life. Having spent her earlier career in the private sector, she felt drawn to give back to the community. When the opportunity arose to join Galway Hospice, she embraced it — and has never looked back.

Under Mary’s leadership, Galway Hospice has strengthened governance, secured Section 38 status, expanded services and achieved independent accreditation. During her tenure, the number of patients cared for has increased by 70 per cent, while maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality.

One of her greatest achievements, she says, is building a strong and committed team. “I see myself as an enabler and facilitator,” Mary explains. “I work alongside a phenomenal team who give their professional knowledge and emotional energy every day to patients and families at a very difficult time. They are deeply committed and willing to go the extra mile to make a real difference.

“Leadership in this sector carries an unusual responsibility — to ensure systems do not overshadow humanity, to protect the voice of the patient and to protect the integrity of the team.”

Looking ahead, Mary’s focus is clear: to develop services that allow earlier access to palliative care, and to build a new, fit-for-purpose hospice that meets the growing needs of Galway’s community. With demand having doubled in the past decade, the planned 36-bed hospice will expand capacity and ensure more families receive care in the right place, at the right time.

“At its heart, hospice care is about dignity,” she says. “And our community deserves a space that truly reflects that.”

One of the clinic’s key offerings is free contraception for women under the age of 36 through the Free Contraception Scheme.

In addition, it participates in the national Cervical Check programme, providing free smear tests. The clinic also supports women experiencing menopause with tailored advice and management options.

Its reputation for discretion and professionalism has made it a reliable choice for patients seeking guidance in sensitive areas of health.

Responding to demand for greater flexibility, the clinic has recently expanded its services to include evening appointments on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Located at Lismoyle House on St Augustine Street, the practice is easily accessible for those living and working in the city centre.

Asumpta Gallagher

Best Practice

Walk into any GP Practice in Ireland and the first person you meet will almost certainly be a woman. The receptionist who answers your call, the secretary who manages your referral, and the practice manager who keeps everything running.

These roles are overwhelmingly held by women, and they are the backbone of primary care in this country, while around half of GPs in Ireland are women.

It is something Asumpta Gallagher knows from the inside. With over 25 years in healthcare management, including nearly two decades working within practices before founding her Galway-based consultancy, Best Practice, Asumpta has built her career around one conviction: that when you invest in the people behind the practice, everyone benefits.

"These women hold practices together," Asumpta explained. "They are highly skilled, deeply committed, and too often overlooked when it comes to professional development and recognition. That is something I am determined to change."

Through Best Practice, Asumpta works with GP practices across Ireland, offering consultancy to strengthen operations and finances, training programmes through Best Practice Academy designed specifically for non-clinical healthcare staff, and people support, including HR guidance and workplace mediation.

Her flagship programme SPARK, launched late last year, is a CPD-accredited training programme built entirely for medical receptionists and secretaries, a first of its kind in Ireland.

For Asumpta, International Women's Day is not just a date on the calendar. It is a reminder that the women who keep our healthcare system running deserve to be seen, supported, and invested in.

Coming from a long line of retailers and with 199 years of retail history on the East, when Hazel McCarthy moved West nearly ten years ago, she saw an opportunity for something special.

Using all her savings to open a small shop in November 2019, Hazel has continually reinvested to bootstrap the business into the micro-emporium you see today. Almost seven years on, this small idea has grown into something she is incredibly proud of.

In 2020, the Toy Corner was named Toy Retailer of the Year. Since then, they have been honoured to feature in the Irish Independent's 100 Best Small Shops and the Irish Times' 100 Best Online Shops for Gifts in 2024. These accolades don't just represent the products on the shelves but the care and personal touch behind them.

Retail hasn't stood still

"Navigating Covid shutdowns, supply chain chaos and rising costs, there were months where the doors were closed, and the future felt uncertain, and somewhere in the middle of that I welcomed two babies, which, in hindsight, was either excellent timing or wildly optimistic," Hazel explained.

"What keeps us going is community. We’ve watched little customers grow into teenagers, worked alongside incredible staff as they have grown with the business, and helped adults rediscover the joy of play, whether it’s a jigsaw, LEGO set, or a truly satisfying fidget," Hazel continued.

Toy Corner is proudly local, fiercely independent and passionate about play for all ages. And if they don’t have it? They will always try to get it.

Head down to the Toy Corner for their free St Partick's Day themed LEGO make and take event on Saturday, March 14 from 2:00pm to 3:30pm.

The Toy Corner is located at An Fuarán, Ballyquirke West, Moycullen and open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00am to 5:30pm.

Marguerite Maher

Solid Accounting Ltd

Solid Accounting Ltd, is a firm built on expertise and a commitment to business success. Marguerite Maher, founder of Solid Accounting Ltd understands first-hand the pressures business owners face.

“From a young age, I developed a deep appreciation for numbers,” she said. “I vividly recall pretending to be a maths teacher in my childhood room, where I would draw mathematical equations on the walls with chalk.”

That early passion led her to pursue accountancy in her twenties, when she secured a trainee accounting position that marked the beginning of her professional journey.

Now with approximately 15 years of experience in the accounting field, both in Ireland and internationally, Marguerite says her passion for her work remains paramount.

Recently, she made the decision to embark on a new adventure by establishing her own accounting practice.

“The move has been both exciting and, at times, overwhelming. It is indeed a continuous learning experience,” she explained.

Solid Accounting Ltd is proud to bring expert financial guidance to businesses, rooted in years of hands-on experience, specialist training, and a genuine passion for helping clients thrive.

Marguerite began her career at a highly regarded accountancy practice in Galway, where she gained a solid foundation in accounting, taxation and financial management. That early training provided the skills and confidence to build her own firm.

“As I progressed in my career, I took on roles in a variety of practices, which allowed me to deepen my expertise, particularly in taxation, liquidation and insolvency,” she explained. “These experiences were instrumental in helping me understand the unique challenges businesses face and how best to support them.”

She is also aware that the decision to close or retire from a business can be emotionally tricky. At Solid Accounting Ltd, Marguerite emphasised that recognising the different stages of each business journey is central to the firm’s ethos, ensuring clients are never alone as they navigate their path.

Reflecting on earlier roles, Marguerite said staff shortages often made it difficult to give clients the dedicated attention they deserved. “Since branching out into my own accounting practice, I can now dedicate the time and attention my clients truly need,” she said.

Better Bedding

Better Bedding has been a trusted fixture in Galway’s retail scene since 1990, going from strength to strength over the years. The store’s reputation for quality and service has only grown, particularly since Michelle Fahy joined the team as store manager in 2020.

Under Michelle’s leadership, Better Bedding has expanded its offerings to include a wider range of furniture alongside its much-loved bedding and home essentials.

With over 20 years of industry experience, Michelle credits the store’s long-standing success to the power of word of mouth and the team’s unwavering commitment to customer service. This dedication is reflected in the store’s numerous five-star Google reviews.

One customer shared, “We discovered Respa Beds in a hotel in Galway and inquired with Better Bedding to see if they could also provide the hospitality line. Of course, they could, and store manager Michelle went through hoops to get it spec’ed, wrapped and shipped to us in Switzerland.

"We now have two cosy Respa beds and fond memories of a long-shot inquiry that turned into a wonderful shopping experience. If you live there, go no further.”

Michelle believes that the personal touch, often missing in larger establishments, is essential in building lasting customer relationships.

Her ethos is rooted in a strong commitment to supporting Irish businesses. “We are proud to stock products from Irish brands like Respa Beds, Troscan Furniture, and Martin McKenna, to name a few. By choosing these companies, we are not only investing in quality but also ensuring the continued success of local manufacturers.”

Michelle believes that buying Irish is key to preserving local craftsmanship and securing sustainable jobs within our communities.

Looking ahead, the team is excited to continue serving the Galway community with the same dedication to quality and customer care that has defined the business for over three decades.

With extensive knowledge in interior design, they offer expert consultations, whether in person or via video call, ensuring every customer finds the perfect products for their home.

Shannon Sheerin

Shannon's Beauty Suites

With more than 13 years of experience in the Aesthetics industry, Shannon Sheerin has built a reputation for helping clients achieve their best possible skin results. In 2021, she opened her own salon, Shannon’s Beauty Suites, located on Lower Salthill Road. Since then, the clinic has grown into a trusted destination for advanced skin treatments, with a strong focus on education, expertise and personalised care.

Shannon’s approach centres on understanding the skin and tailoring treatments to suit each individual client: "In salons, it's good that there is more education. It was very basic knowledge years ago, you came in for your facial, and that was it, but now we are diving deeper, and we know more about the skin and how it works.”

Her commitment to results-driven skincare has recently been recognised, with the salon nominated for The Cointreau Hi Style Awards 2025 and previously named runner-up for Local Business of the Year at the Irish Hair and Beauty Awards in 2023.

Shannon’s Beauty Suites are also the proud owners of the first InMode Triton machine in the West of Ireland. The state-of-the-art technology allows the salon to offer a range of advanced treatments, including InMode Lift, IPL and Laser Hair Removal.

The InMode Triton machine offers next-level Laser Hair Removal treatments suitable for all skin types. Treatments are typically completed every four to six weeks for the face and every six to eight weeks for the body, depending on the client.

The InMode Lift includes two treatments that target loose jowls and submental fat on the lower face. Forma tightens, sculpts and contours the lower half of the face, while the Mini FX add-on targets submental fat around the chin, jawline and cheek areas using radio frequency technology and lymphatic drainage.

IPL treatments are also available and are designed to target pigmentation, red thread veins, rosacea and acne, while stimulating collagen and elastin production.

Alongside these advanced treatments, the salon also offers Chemical Peels, Microneedling and Facials, as well as skincare products from Image, Genesis and Skin Formula.

We specialise in Summer sun holidays, Escorted Tours and long-haul adventures, Worldwide River and Ocean cruising and bucket-list travel.

Demand is rising for destinations such as Japan, New Zealand, and river cruising, while solo travel is another growing market, and we are seeing an increasing number of clients choosing to travel independently with like-minded people.
