Salutary warning for those selling cars

A YOUNG Ballinasloe man found himself before Tuam Court to answer charges relating to a car he had disposed of eight years before. He didn’t drive, cycled to work and never did a test, but the car he owned briefly as a teenager was coming back to haunt him.

Judge James Faughnan said there was a salutary lesson for anyone selling a car here – always get the paperwork in order before you hand over the keys.

Prosecuting Garda Sgt Christy Brown said that this was all very well but John Cawley, 37 Hymany Park, Ballinasloe was still the registered owner of the car and there was evidence of it being driven widely around the country.

Gearóid Geraghty solr (defending ) said his client acquired and sold the car at the age of 18 and he was now 26 and had no idea who owned it or where it had been in the intervening years.

He added that his client didn’t drive, never took a driving test and cycled to work. He quipped that the car in question had a “MO reg which might make it hard to sell.”

Judge Faughnan adjourned the case to the April 3 sitting of Ballinasloe Court for further clarification.
