Life begins at fifty, judge tells defendant

“I hope you’re turning a corner, look after yourself,” a judge told a 50-year old man who appeared before her at Galway District Court on public order charges.

The defendant had tried to gain access to the Cope hostel at the Fairgreen in a highly intoxicated condition. Gardaí were called and Francis McDonagh had to be arrested for his own safety.

Judge Catherine Ryan was told that the Cope rules were that no one availing of accommodation can be on the premises under the influence of alcohol.

McDonagh (50 ) is originally from Galway but had lived in Donegal for 27 years before returning. He had 33 previous convictions and his solicitor said he wished to apologise to the Gardaí for his behaviour. The defence added that he had a complicated lifestyle, had issues with drink, but hoped to get on top of things.

Judge Ryan said he was 50 now and “life begins at 50,” but his record wasn’t great with 33 previous convictions. Imposing a fine of €100, she told McDonagh that she hoped he was turning a corner and to look after himself.
