A visit to the city’s Christmas market proved costly for a man who had to be arrested for his own safety and the safety of the public.
Judge Catherine Ryan heard that the man was so intoxicated when Gardaí found him at the market on December 22 last that they needed to take him into custody for his own sake.
He came before Galway District Court on two public order charges, one for public drunkenness and one for engaging in threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour in a public place. This latter charge was withdrawn by the State and a guilty plea was entered on a Section 4 of the Public Order Act for public drunkenness.
The court heard the man was from Ukraine and was two years in Ireland. He had three previous public order convictions. His defence pleaded that he had a difficulty with alcohol and wanted to apologise to the Gardaí for his behaviour. He worked in construction, the Judge was told.
Judge Ryan said she was taking into account the fact that he was working and had entered an early guilty plea, and imposed a fine of €200.
