Sinn Féin TD for Galway West Mairéad Farrell has launched a survey asking passengers on the 424 bus service between Conamara and Galway city to log any time they are left behind by the bus to draw the NTA’s attention to the ongoing capacity issues on the route at peak times.

Launching the survey, Deputy Farrell said there have been persistent capacity issues on the 424 bus service, despite the upgrades to the route that were made in December 2024.

“It is extremely welcome that so many people want to avail of the bus service, as public transport needs to be a major part of solving Galway’s notorious traffic jams.

“However, if the service is not reliable, it cannot be a realistic option for people and the number of cars on the road increase as a result.

“We need to give people a real alternative to driving into the city,” she added.

“This is why the NTA and Bus Éireann must work together to immediately increase capacity on the route.“In October last year, a review of the route was announced. However, there is no action following that review yet, and this was after a year of the issue being raised by both passengers and representatives.

“The Taoiseach said that funding is not the problem, so what we need now is action.“I am hopeful that the response to this survey will give the NTA a clear picture of the issue on the ground and that capacity will be increased on the route as a result.“That is why I am asking anyone who has experienced being left behind by the 424 to fill out the survey and share their story,” concluded Deputy Farrell.
