Minister of State Noel Grealish has welcomed the announcement that €50,000 has been allocated for the appointment of consultants for route selection and design of the new Claregalway Inner Relief Road.

“The long tailbacks in Claregalway have, for years, been causing major problems for residents and commuters who have to travel through the village to get to and from work.

“The bypass of the village is vital for the future development of Claregalway and, indeed, for the health and well-being of the people who live there,” said Minister Grealish.

“You have close to 20,000 cars, trucks and buses travelling through the area every single working day, and it was never meant to cope with that level of traffic. The opening of the Gort-Tuam M17 motorway didn’t really make much difference; it’s still choked with traffic.

“I have campaigned for years for the relief road project to advance, and since joining the Government, I have been in regular contact with senior Ministers on the issue to press home its importance.

“I am delighted that funding has now been allocated for the appointment of consultants to take the project to the next stage. It is a sign of real progress, and hopefully, we will see ground being broken for the bypass road before too long,” he said.
