Cllr Thomas Welby, Independent councillor and candidate for the upcoming Galway West by-election, has welcomed the decision by An Coimisiún Pleanála to grant planning permission for a pedestrian bridge, submitted by Galway County Council, in Oughterard.

The project is essential for improving safety for all pedestrians, with particular importance for young children attending the local schools. The granting of planning permission has been warmly welcomed across the Oughterard community.

”This project has been a priority for me for a long time," Cllr Welby said. "It has proved very challenging due to severe environmental issues, so this decision represents one of the most positive outcomes we have achieved in Oughterard during my time in politics. I want to thank the team who worked on this project for their commitment and hard work.”

With planning approval now secured, Cllr Welby said the next and most critical step is to ensure funding is put in place so that the project can proceed to construction.

He confirmed that he has been in contact with Minister Noel Grealish, a strong supporter of the project, and that discussions with relevant funding bodies are already under way.

Cllr Welby concluded by stating that he will continue to work closely with Galway County Council, the Minister, and all stakeholders to ensure the project is delivered as quickly as possible for the benefit of the Oughterard community.
