Minister of State Noel Grealish has welcomed the allocation of €1.5 million to tackle flooding in the village of Claregalway.

This funding has been allocated towards the alleviation of flooding that regularly occurs in the centre of the village during heavy rainfall. It has been allocated under Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII ) grant allocations to local authorities for national roads in 2026.

“This issue has for years been causing major problems for the people of Claregalway and for commuters who have to travel through the village to get to and from work,” says Grealish, Galway West TD and member of the Regional Independents Group in coalition government.

“You have serious flooding occurring on the road in the middle of the village, near the Claregalway Hotel, almost every time there is some heavy rainfall,” he said, in reference to the N83 which crosses the Clare River at Claregalway.

County Councillor Tomás Grealish (Ind ) also welcomed the funding announcement to address a serious traffic hazard that arises every time there is heavy rainfall.

“It results in the northbound lane of the road being totally under water, which is putting people in danger as motorists have to cross to the other side of the road into the path of oncoming traffic.

Phase one of the flood works, completed last year, was construction of an overflow pond to store rainwater which drains from the road.
