'Hardworking' young man avoids a drugs conviction

A Judge was impressed with a young man who she described as “a hardworking individual who wanted to improve his lot in life” when he came before her on a drug possession charge.

Judge Valerie Corcoran made her observations at Galway District Court when dealing with the 23-year-old student who admitted to possession of cocaine valued at €50 which Gardaí discovered during a search of his home.

The defendant, the Court heard, was a mechanical engineering student who worked in security and was about to begin work in a medical devices company. He ultimately planned to set up a food-truck business of his own and was following a Prime for Life drug awareness course.

Judge Corcoran noted that the defendant had no previous convictions and was pleading guilty to the offence, so she would give him one chance to avoid a conviction, but warned him that he wouldn’t get a second. She added that she in no way condoned his behaviour but as he was a hardworking individual getting on with his life, she would give him a chance.

She would strike out the charge provided he made a €300 contribution to Galway Simon Community. If this was not paid a conviction would be recorded against him and a fine of €300 imposed.
