Cllr Cillian Keane has intensified calls for urgent national roads funding to deliver critical drainage and paving works on the N83 through Claregalway, following a meeting with Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien TD.

Joined by John Connolly TD, Cllr Keane urged the Department of Transport to provide a clear funding allocation to Galway County Council to enable the long-promised infrastructure project to proceed without further delay.

“The N83 through Claregalway has reached a crisis point,” said Cllr Keane. “Standing water and failing drainage are creating dangerous conditions for motorists, while deteriorating road surfaces and footpaths are impacting everyone who lives, works and travels through our local area. The community has waited long enough—this project needs funding now,” he said.

The infrastructure issues have been a priority for Cllr Keane since his election in 2024, with growing local frustration at the lack of tangible progress.

“Deputy Connolly and I delivered a clear message: Claregalway cannot wait any longer,” said Cllr Keane. “This funding is essential for safety, accessibility and the future development of our community. We’re demanding a firm commitment and a concrete timeline from the Department.”

Cllr Keane expressed hope that the discussions would yield a positive funding decision in the near future and reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with Deputy Connolly and Galway County Council to secure the necessary allocation and deliver these improvements for the Claregalway community.
