Galway City and County homeowners are being encouraged to take advantage of a new and expanded range of grants to improve the energy efficiency of their homes and cut heating costs.

The supports, delivered through the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI ) under the National Residential Retrofit Plan 2026, include higher grants for insulation, new supports for heat pumps, and the introduction of grants for energy-efficient windows and doors.

Councillor John McDonagh said the measures would make energy upgrades more achievable for households across both the city and county.

“These new and improved grants are very welcome and will be of real benefit to homeowners across Galway. Rising costs have put energy upgrades out of reach for many people, and these changes make it far more affordable to improve comfort and reduce energy bills,” he said.

From February and March 2026, homeowners can avail of

— Higher grants for attic and cavity wall insulation

— A new heat pump system grant of up to €12,500

— New grants for windows and doors, where insulation standards are met

— Enhanced supports for first-time buyers and households on qualifying welfare payments.

Cllr McDonagh encouraged homeowners to check their eligibility and act early.

“Even small upgrades like insulation can make a big difference. I would strongly encourage people to look at what supports are available and take advantage of them,” he said.
