Next month, the Annaghdown community and the wider Galway area will come together for a very special event: the John Killilea Memorial Walk/Jog/Run, held in loving memory of a local man whose spirit, generosity and passion for life left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.
The JK10K takes place on Saturday, February 21, at 2pm, starting from Annaghdown National School, and all proceeds will go to Féileacáin – the Stillbirth & Neonatal Death Association of Ireland.
John Killilea passed away last year, far too young, and his loss is still deeply felt across the parish and beyond. Known throughout the west as one of the most obliging and kind-hearted men you could meet, John was never slow to lend a hand or offer encouragement. He knew both tragedy and light in his life, yet neither ever dimmed his warmth, his determination, or his drive to live fully.
Sport played a huge role in John’s life. As a player, he proudly represented Annaghdown at both Senior and Junior Football levels, always giving everything he had when he wore the maroon jersey. Skillful, fast and tough, his dedication never wavered. At juvenile level, John also hurled for Annaghdown, where he is fondly remembered as a brave and reliable goalkeeper. Beyond his playing days, John continued to give selflessly as a manager, mentor and volunteer within the club. One of his proudest achievements came in 2007, when he guided the Junior ‘A’ Footballers to a County League title alongside his father-in-law, Tom Small, with his brother-in-law Vinny Small also playing a key role in that memorable success.
John’s love for fitness extended far beyond the club, with Ironman triathlons and marathons among his many achievements. It is fitting, then, that this 10km event reflects his passion while welcoming people of all ages and abilities. Whether you choose to run, jog or walk – whether you’ve completed an Ironman or never run a kilometre before – the JK10K is for you.
Most importantly, the event supports Féileacáin, a charity that provided immense comfort and care to the Killilea family and continues to offer vital support to families facing the heartbreak of stillbirth and neonatal loss across Ireland. Finisher medals will be presented on the day, but the true reward lies in honouring John’s memory and helping others in their darkest moments.
Even if you cannot attend, donations are warmly welcomed. On February 21st in Annaghdown, stride forward together, and help keep John Killilea’s remarkable spirit alive. You can donate at www.idonate.ie/jk10k
