Galway senior ladies footballers look to build on their opening day win as they face Cork at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh this Sunday.
Daniel Moynihan's side came out comfortable 0-16 to 0-8 winners over Meath in the opening game of the Lidl NFL Division 1 campaign. Kate Slevin starred as she scored seven points, including becoming the first inter-county player to score a two-pointer in Ladies Senior Football.
Galway were in control throughout the contest and were particularly impressive in the second half. Meath did not get their first score after the interval until the 53rd minute. Before that, a point from Roisin Leonard and two from Slevin extended the lead to eight. Minutes later and Slevin's historic two-pointer pushed the lead out to 10.
In the end, Galway wound up eight-point victors to get off to the perfect start in the league.
Cork played out a thrilling 1-10 to 2-7 draw against Kildare in their opening fixture.
The Rebels showcased their resilience to come from three-points down with 10 minutes remaining to salvage a draw a MTU Cork. Two Abigail Ring efforts and a Katie Quirke free levelled the tie with time almost up. Alannah Prizemann’s converted free looked to have won it for Kildare before Quirke’s fifth converted free of the afternoon, four minutes into injury-time, meant the spoils were shared.
Kildare will feel the tie got away from them but a new-look Cork gave an impressive account of themselves on their first day back in Division 1.
All roads lead to an intriguing battle down south this Sunday. Throw-in at SuperValu Páirc Ui Chaoimh is 2pm.
