I knew speed van was there, pleads BWW driver

A motorist pleaded that he couldn’t have been speeding when a GoSave detection van registered him travelling over the 50kph limit in Kilkerrin village.

Local man Padraig Collins, Scregg, Kilkerrin was charged with driving at 60kph in the 50 zone in the townland of Tullaghaun on July 12 last.

He was brought before Judge James Faughnan at Tuam District Court as he had not paid the fixed penalty issued. The Judge told him that had he paid it, he would have received three penalty points but now that it had come to Court, five points would be put on his licence.

The defendant pleaded that he had just pulled out from a shop and knew the GoSafe van was there so he couldn’t have reached the speed that was stated on his ticket.

The Judge asked what kind of a car he was driving and when he was told it was a high-end BMW, he said a car like that could easily reach the speed indicated in a short distance.

The Judge added that if Collins wanted to contest his decision he was entitled to do so.

He adjourned the case until the March 10 sitting of the Court for the defendant to have time to consider his options.
