The Gaelic Athletic Association, founded in 1884, has played a central role in Irish cultural and social life for over a century, extending far beyond the playing fields. This rich history will be explored through objects both iconic and unexpected in an illustrated talk at Galway City Museum by cultural historian Siobhán Doyle of the National Museum of Ireland on January 24 from 2:00–3:00pm.
Based on her acclaimed book A History of the GAA in 100 Objects (2022 ), Doyle’s talk examines how material culture — from medals and jerseys to personal artefacts — helps tell the story of the GAA and its profound influence on Irish identity. The event will place particular emphasis on Connacht and Galway, highlighting locally significant objects featured in the book.
Among these are a ‘Citie of the Tribes’ banner carried in defiance of British authorities on Gaelic Sunday in August 1918, and the famous ‘Colie K’s Hole in the Ceiling’ — a dent left in the roof of Taaffe’s Bar in Galway during jubilant celebrations after Pádraic Joyce’s goal in the 1998 All-Ireland Football Final.
Originally from County Wexford, Siobhán Doyle is a cultural historian at the National Museum of Ireland. She holds a PhD in Museum Studies from Technological University Dublin and has lectured extensively in Design History.
The event is free of charge, but advance booking is essential as places are limited. Bookings can be made by phoning the Museum at (091 ) 532460 or by email to [email protected]
The talk is suitable for adults and young people aged 12 and over.
