Penney kicks season off in record-breaking style

Craughwell AC’s Conor Penney kicked off his indoor season by smashing his own personal best by six centimetres.

Penney entered the competition at 1.90m and continued to clear throughout the competition, clearing all heights to 2.09m. He then attempted a best of 2.11m and soared high over the bar to claim a superb new club record.

The local athlete is also set to be awarded for the 2025 Galway Sports Star of the Year award for athletics at a special event in Galway Bay Hotel on Friday, January 16.

Galway Indoors

The Galway County Indoor Track and Field Championships take place in TUS Athlone Indoor Arena on Saturday, January 17 to Sunday, January 18, with competition for Juveniles and Adults.

The U12 to U19 programme will be held on Saturday from 10am, while the U9 to U12 age groups will compete on Sunday. The Adult programme will also take place on Sunday afternoon between 3pm and 4.30pm, including a 60m, 400m, 800m, 3km, as well as Long and High Jumps and Shot Putt.

National Track and Field League

The first national events of the indoor season kicks off with Round 1 on Saturday, January 24.

Several Galway clubs will compete in the National Indoor Arena in Abbottstown, Dublin. Round 2 will be held Sunday, February 8 in Athlone, with the final set for Saturday, February 14 in Dublin.
