Galway City Councillor John McDonagh has welcomed confirmation that funding has been approved for the Green Area Upgrades at Sliding Rock Park, Shantalla, following the project’s success in the Participatory Budget 2025 process.
The project was selected after four shortlisted proposals were put to a public vote, with members of the community casting their votes online. The Sliding Rock Park proposal received the highest level of public support, securing funding for delivery.
The Participatory Budget initiative is designed to focus on different parts of the city on a rolling basis each year, ensuring communities across Galway have an opportunity to bring forward and vote on local improvement projects.
Sliding Rock Park is a well-known park in the city and forms part of an area with a strong civic and historical tradition, associated with public gatherings addressed by Daniel O’Connell during the 19th century.
The works will include the installation of a French Boules (Pétanque ) playing area, along with landscaping improvements such as new benches, tree planting, and flower beds. The upgrades are designed to encourage outdoor recreation while enhancing a valued community space.
Councillor McDonagh, who is also a member of the local Residents’ Association, worked closely with residents to support and progress the project through the participatory budgeting process.
“This month marks the point where we officially welcome this funding, and it’s a great outcome for the community,” he said.
“It reflects strong public support and shows what can be achieved when people have a direct say in how local funding is allocated.”Works are expected to be delivered during 2026, subject to detailed design and procurement.
