Cllr Andrew Reddington has advised the public to make submissions on the Headford Active Travel Scheme for Church Road.
The active travel team have extended public consultation until tomorrow Jan 9 at 12pm under The Section 38, The proposal focuses on two main locations: L-2103 Church Road in Headford and L-21031, the access road to Headford Presentation College.
The proposals include a series of measures designed to calm traffic, improve pedestrian safety, and enhance accessibility for residents and students.
Specifically, the plan calls for narrowing the existing carriageway by widening footpaths on the south side and introducing a grass verge between the footpath and the carriageway on both sides.
A raised zebra crossing adjacent to the church car park entrance is proposed to boost pedestrian safety, and new pedestrian links are set to be formed along the boundary wall to the church car park and at the National School, facilitating easier access.
Additionally, the project includes a raised access at the church car park entrance to prioritize pedestrians, as well as road markings that clearly indicate the presence of schools. Bollards are to be installed along the kerbs to deter illegal parking.
For the access road leading to Presentation College Headford the plan features tightening of the junction with Church Road, the provision of widened footpaths to improve pedestrian access along the entire public road, and the introduction of a raised pedestrian crossing to provide safer crossing and to link newly widened footpaths with existing ones at the set-down area.
Cllr Reddington stated that there are a lot of children using this carriageway between PCH and Headford national school.
“Something needs to be done, however parking must be protected on the main road and there is no need for any grass verges on the scheme,” he said, adding that he thanked the Active Travel Team for their support.
