A pre-Christmas night on the town in Galway had a nasty New Year hangover for a young father when he was fined €500 for a public order offence.
James Barrett of 65 Corrach Bui, Westside, was before Monday’s sitting of Galway District Court (January 5 ) in connection with events that took place on December 20.
Judge Fiona Lydon heard evidence of Gardaí being called to deal with a disturbance at Cross Street at 3.50am.
They found Barrett in a highly intoxicated condition and he became belligerent towards the Gardaí, refusing to co-operate and calling them names. He also tried to start a fight with an innocent bystander, the Court heard.
Olivia Traynor solr (defending ) said her client was finding the thought of the case hanging over him very stressful and he wanted to get it over with straightaway.
Her client, she said, accepted that his behaviour on the night was not acceptable and was pleading guilty at the first opportunity.
He had attempted to apologise to the Gardaí involved and wanted to repeat that apology in Court.
Barrett is 30 and has two children and is not working, the Judge was told. Ms Traynor said he just wanted to deal with it and get it over with. Judge Lydon imposed a fine of €500.
