Galway City is set to welcome the arrival of 2026 with a joyful, family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration designed especially for all ages. Renowned for its vibrant festival atmosphere, the City of the Tribes is once again embracing an early evening countdown, ensuring families can celebrate together in a safe, fun, and inclusive setting.
From 6pm to 9pm on New Year’s Eve, the historic surroundings of St. Nicholas’s Collegiate Church will come alive with music, light, and celebration, culminating in a special countdown at 8.30pm.
At the heart of the festivities is a dedicated programme of live music and the captivating “Trick of the Light” multimedia installation. Projection-mapped onto the outdoor façade of St. Nicholas’s Collegiate Church, this bespoke audio-visual artwork will transform the city centre into a glowing canvas of colour, sound, and imagination. Designed to inspire warmth and wonder during the winter nights, “Trick of the Light” creates a magical backdrop for families as they gather to mark the close of 2025 and look ahead to an exciting new year.
The live music programme promises something for everyone. The evening kicks off at 6pm with the Galway Ukulele Tribe, whose infectious energy and feel-good performances are guaranteed to get the celebrations underway. Their lively renditions of well-loved songs by artists such as The Beatles, David Bowie, The Saw Doctors, and The Waterboys — along with a few seasonal favourites — set a cheerful tone for the night.
Next to take the stage is TBL8, a high-energy brass band celebrated for their dynamic sound and modern twist on classic and contemporary hits. Known for their powerful stage presence and upbeat performances, TBL8 bring a bold and joyful energy that keeps the momentum building as the countdown draws closer.
Bringing the evening to an electrifying peak is PrYmary Colours, a vibrant and acclaimed act that fuses music, dance, performance, and striking visuals into one unforgettable experience. With performances on major stages and festivals at home and abroad, PrYmary Colours deliver a high-octane blend of electronic pop and funk, guiding audiences right up to and through the early New Year’s Eve countdown.
Beyond the main stage, families can explore the wider “Trick of the Light” installations, including additional illuminated displays at the iconic Spanish Arch. Created by local artists Jennifer Cunningham and Jane Cassidy in collaboration with Galway Training Centre Merlin Park, the St. Nicholas installation draws inspiration from celestial orbits, neolithic engravings, and Galway’s vibrant local culture. An atmospheric soundtrack composed with a characterful pump organ adds to the mystical and immersive experience.
Following the celebrations, families are encouraged to soak up Galway’s festive atmosphere with a stroll through the city. The Galway Christmas Market remains open until 8pm for last-minute treats, while restaurants, cafés, and bars offer plenty of options to continue the celebrations. After 9pm, revellers can also enjoy Galway’s legendary nightlife and live music venues.
