One of the highlights of the Galway Races Autumn Festival is the National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBCRI ) annual fundraising lunch, ‘Race in Pink’. The sold-out event, which took place on October 26, was a big hit with racegoers this year raising an incredible €65,000 for the charity based at the Lambe Institute, University of Galway.
Guests enjoyed a fun-filled day with The Jukebox Brothers and Colin Fahy supplying the music, The Black Tie Magician added a touch of magic, while auctioneer, extraordinaire, Colm O’Donnellan from O’Donnellan & Joyce Auctioneers hosted a fundraising auction. The Best Dressed sponsored by Anthony Ryans was won by Leona Duffy from Headford and the charity held the draw for their very popular raffle, ‘Win a BMW’ which was won by Conor Butler from Waterford.
Speaking about the importance of ‘Race in Pink’ to the Galway Races Autumn Festival, Michael Moloney, CEO at Galway Racecourse said: “Race in Pink has become a hugely important and much-anticipated part of our Autumn Festival. The generosity shown by our racegoers and supporters each year is truly inspiring, and we are proud to support NBCRI in the vital work they do in breast cancer research and patient outcomes.”
Breast cancer remains the most common cancer affecting women in Ireland, with 1 in 7 women expected to develop the disease and more than 3,587 new cases diagnosed each year. The NBCRI collaborates with universities and hospitals worldwide to advance diagnostic techniques and improve treatment options, striving to deliver better outcomes for patients facing the disease.
NBCRI Director of Operations, Patrick Casey said, “The funds raised at Race in Pink are critical to enabling our researchers to continue their work into earlier diagnosis and more effective treatments for breast cancer. We are incredibly grateful to Galway Racecourse, our sponsors, and everyone who attended and supported the event.”
