Sinn Féin TD for Galway East, Louis O’Hara, has described the delay in repairing the N65 road between Killimor and Portumna as unacceptable.
This follows a recent Freedom Of Information request which showed that over €30,000 has been spent on the rent of the stop-go lights by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII ).
Speaking on the issue, Deputy O’Hara said the current temporary stop-go light system has been in place on the N65 near Heathlawn for over a year now following an incident in 2024.
“I recently submitted a Freedom of Information request, which showed that over €30,000 has been spent on the rent of the stop-go lights since they were first erected in 2024. This is a considerable amount of money which will continue to rise as the repair works have not commenced.
“The latest update that I have received outlined that TII are awaiting a design report for the repair works and that construction is not expected to be completed until 2026. This is an unacceptable delay in repairing the road. The N65 is a key link between Portumna and many towns in East Galway and many constituents have expressed their frustration with the ongoing delay in repairing this part of the road.
“Transport Infrastructure Ireland must progress this project and I will continue to press the need for the design report to be completed and for repair works to commence as a matter of urgency,” he said.
