Kinvara solo adventurer to launch book on mindset

Dr Karen Weekes, the Kinvara resident who became the first Irish woman to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean, will next week launch a book outlining her achievement, as well as how to build the mindset to meet your own challenges.

When Dr Weekes reached Barbados in December 2021, she had survived relentless storms, hallucinations, shark encounters, crushing exhaustion and 80 days of solitude in a 25-foot rowing boat, which rewired her understanding of human resilience.

Her new book, Turbulent Waters: Coping in Extremes is her story – raw, unfiltered and unflinchingly honest.

But this isn’t simply an adventure story. Dr Weekes truthfully reveals not only the challenges faced during the crossing, but also the mindset that made it possible.

Drawing on her extensive endurance experiences on both land and sea – plus solid academic research – she shares the proven techniques that helped her master effective coping under the most extreme pressure imaginable.

This book presents specific, actionable strategies for building resilience and focus in a succinct and factual way, providing relevant lessons whether you are an athlete pushing your limits, an adventurer chasing wild dreams, or someone navigating life’s everyday challenges.

The strategies and tools throughout the pages are tried, tested and proven to be effective across all walks of life.

Turbulent Waters: Coping in Extremes will be launched in Tullys, Kinvara at 7pm Tuesday December 16.
