It will be a momentous week at the University of Galway as the Ryan Institute unveils the All-Ireland Peatlands Centre of Excellence (APEX ).
This launch marks a significant step toward addressing the urgent challenges facing Ireland’s peatlands—from decarbonisation and biodiversity loss to questions of cultural heritage and a just transition. Designed as a hub for innovation, training, and policy development, APEX will support vital restoration and conservation work across the island and beyond.
To celebrate this milestone, the University will host a week-long display highlighting the interdisciplinary RePEAT project, a collaboration between Trinity College Dublin and the University of Galway. Throughout the week, visitors are invited to explore the history, ecology, and future restoration of Ireland’s peatlands, brought to life through the project’s latest findings.
The RePEAT research display will run from Monday, December 15 to Friday, December 19 in The Atrium, Orbsen Building, offering an engaging and informative experience for all who wish to learn more about these unique landscapes.
The highlight of the week will be a public lecture and the formal launch of APEX on Thursday, December 18, from 17:00 to 20:00 in the Michael D. Higgins Auditorium. This event will bring together researchers, community members, and policymakers to reflect on the significance of peatlands and the ambitious future set out by the new Centre.
They invite the public in celebrating this exciting chapter for peatland research, restoration, and resilience.
