A DRUGS conviction would have disastrous consequences for a young man working in the mines in Australia, his solicitor pleaded at Galway District Court.
The man was stopped by Gardaí at Mary Street in the city on January 25 last. He threw a plastic bag to the ground and this was found to contain cocaine valued at €80. He cooperated with Gardaí, admitted the offence and had no previous convictions, Judge Adrian Harris was told.
His solicitor said his client was 23 and a “hard working lad”. He had never been in trouble before and a conviction would have disastrous consequence for his employment in the mines.
Judge Harris said he had issued warningS many times of the consequence of a drug conviction.
“People think it Is just a night out and there are no consequence, but there definitely are.” he said.
He decided to strike out the charge on condition that a donation of €300 be made to Claddagh River Patrol.
