Fine Gael Councillor Eddie Hoare has welcomed the National Transport Authority’s (NTA ) proposal for a new Park and Ride facility at Cappagh, describing it as “a positive and much-needed step toward tackling traffic congestion and improving sustainable transport options for Galway City.”

Cllr Hoare said the proposed Cappagh site — located on the western side of the city — represents a significant opportunity to reduce commuter traffic entering the city centre and to support a more reliable public transport network.

“The proposed Park and Ride at Cappagh will be a valuable asset for the west side of Galway, offering commuters using the R336 a practical and sustainable alternative to driving into the city. It’s an encouraging sign that the NTA is prioritising real solutions for our city’s chronic congestion issues,” Cllr. Hoare said.

However, he emphasised that a single site will not be enough to address Galway’s broader traffic challenges and has called on the NTA to examine additional Park and Ride locations along other major routes into the city.

“We also need to see progress on Park and Ride facilities on the eastern, northern, and southern approaches to Galway — particularly along the N6, N84, and N59 corridors. A city-wide network of Park and Ride sites is essential if we are serious about cutting traffic volumes and improving accessibility,” he added.

Cllr. Hoare reiterated his commitment to working with the NTA, Galway City Council, and local communities to ensure that transport solutions are balanced, effective, and aligned with Galway’s long-term growth and sustainability goals.

“Park and Ride forms a key parts of the Galway Transport Strategy. We have seen great progress in the City’s future rail offerings with the massive redevelopment at Ceannt Station. Bus Connects has been slow but is now building up momentum with the recent positive planning outcomes. We need a transport network that gives people real choices and helps us build a cleaner, less congested city for everyone,” he concluded.
