Judge refuses jurisdiction in alleged student drug case

A Judge at Galway District Court refused to hear a drug possession case against a young defendant because she considered the case too serious — it will now go forward to the higher Circuit Criminal Court.

Before Judge Fiona Lydon was Joshua Rodericks, charged with possession of a significant amount of cannabis, a large amount of cash and a digital weighing scales.

The Court heard that it will be alleged that the defendant was stopped in a taxi by Gardaí and was discovered to have 18 deal bags of cannabis valued at €1,270 on his person. When his house was subsequently searched, €4,390 in cash was found and a digital scales suspected of being used to weigh out cannabis deals, it is alleged.

The Judge was told the defendant was not working and a student, and free legal aid was granted.

Judge Lydon said she was refusing to accept jurisdiction because of the amount of drugs, the cash that was found and the digital weighing scales. The matter will now go forward for the preparation of a book of evidence and a new hearing date.
