Dumping at bottle bank not as bad as bog – Judge

Dumping household waste at a bottle bank in Ballinasloe was serious, but at least it was not as bad as down some bog road where it was difficult to clean it up.

This was the reaction of Judge James Faughnan at Ballinasloe District Court when dealing with a charge of illegal dumping against Patricia Lynch, 36, Glentaun Close, Creagh.

The Court was told that a Community Warden came across five bags containing household waste dumped illegally at the bottle bank in Ballinasloe. The defendant was identified from documents contained in the bags.

Judge James Faughnan said he wasn not forgiving the defendant, but at least she had dumped her waste in bags at the bottle bank. “It could have been worse,” he added, if the waste had been dumped down some bog road where it would have been much more difficult to clean it up.

The Court heard that the Co Council costs for clearing away the bags was approximately €200. Judge Faughnan said that if the defendant paid €300 towards the costs by December, he would consider applying the Probation Act.
